Why?

We have been working with children of all ages for over 3 decades and understand that the best indicator for good dental development is that which is established very early in life. It is particularly important to identify any possible problem when children are infants. A visit to the dentist at this age can provide peace of mind for any parent.

How do I claim the free consultation for my child?

Simply make an "adult" appointment with us for a examination and cleaning and we will honour a free consultation for any child in your family under the age of 5 years old.

Child’s Abscessed Tooth: Dealing with the Emergency

As your Bondi dentist, we are equipped to deal with all kinds of emergencies, so if you are in a situation where your child has an abscessed primary tooth, come to us for help.  We have an emergency dentist available 24 hours and 7 days a week.We can make your child comfortable and fix the problem.  An abscessed tooth can cause a great deal of problems if it is not fixed immediately.  That is why our Bondi 24 hours dental office is a great option for treating your dental emergency.
When you come to our emergency dentist, he will assess the problem and decide if it is an abscess or a problem that can lead to an abscess.  Then, he will decide if your child needs a Pulpotomy or a Pulpectomy.

Pulpotomy vs. Pulpectomy

If your child has an infection that is not yet an abscess, we will likely recommend a Pulpotomy.  This is a procedure in which the coronal pulp is completely removed.  The radicular pulp will stay intact.  The tooth will likely not need any additional work.  It should completely function and be just fine until the permanent tooth comes in.
However, if the tooth is abscessed, we will then need to do a Pulpectomy.  This procedure will remove all of the pulp and then fill the root canals.  While this is similar to the root canal procedure used on adults, it is not nearly as comprehensive. Only one visit is required for this procedure.  In most cases, this will completely fix the problem.  The tooth will remain healthy and vital until the permanent tooth comes in.

Benefits of These Procedures

When your child gets a Pulpotomy or Pulpectomy, the vitality of the tooth can be maintained. In addition, all of the infection can be cleared out and the tooth will stay in place, thus holding a spot for the permanent tooth.
This is essential.  Primary teeth serve a very important function, which means dentists do not like to extract primary teeth unless it is absolutely necessary.

Importance of these Procedures

In most cases, an abscessed tooth in a child is not painful.  The gum structure is quite differnet for primary teeth than permanent teeth, and due to the structural differences, abscesses can drain and rarely cause discomfort.
That does not mean they are not dangerous, though.
An abscess can infect other areas of the mouth, so it must be fixed.  Also, if it is not treated, it can cause the tooth to lose all function.  The tooth can end up crumbling, and thus the child will be left without a primary tooth.
Whenever a primary tooth is lost too early, the other teeth can move over and fill in the spot.  Proper spacing is necessary, as the permanent teeth rely on the spacing when they come in.
If your child has a problem with a tooth, contact our Bondi 24 hours dental immediately.  Even if he is not in pain, he might have an abscess that requires immediate treatment.  Our Bondi Beach dentist will assess the situation and find the treatment that will be best for the situation.
