Full Mouth Reconstruction
“Do you want to wind back the clock?”
Full Mouth Reconstruction
Full mouth reconstruction is a dental treatment program to restore a patient’s full set of teeth to their original look and function.
Full mouth reconstruction is required when you have the following oral conditions:
- Multiple missing teeth that caused tilting and migration of the remaining teeth
- Severely worn teeth due to Bruxism (night grinding) or gastric reflux
- Broken or weakened teeth due to previous failed dental treatments
- Advance periodontic condition resulting in loose teeth
All of the above conditions require a ‘long term solution’ to achieve results which will be durable, functional and aesthetically pleasing.
If these conditions are not treated, ultimately, the patient may end up losing all of the teeth. Therefore ‘full mouth reconstruction’ is indeed a program designed to help patients ‘wind back the clock’ and reconstruct their oral tissues to become healthy and functional again.
Because ‘full mouth reconstruction’ may involve a lot of dental issues, the restorative dentist should have:
- adequate knowledge and experience to correctly diagnose and identify all problem areas
- the ability to plan a comprehensive treatment most appropriate to rectify all dental issues
- good clinical skills and competence to carry out all procedures.
A good restorative dentist will use the following methods to assist in his diagnoses:
Observation- Listening to the patient’s complaints
- Studying the patient’s previous medical and dental history
- Complete and thorough oral examination
- Diagnostic radiographs
- Study models
- Patient’s expectations and requirements
- Financial consideration
As ‘full mouth reconstruction’ is an extensive treatment program dealing with a number of dental issues, the treatment plan may require several or all of the following procedures:
- Periodontic (gum) treatment
- Root canal
- Extraction of any tooth or teeth that are too broken down or damaged
- Complete ‘build-up’ on severely worn teeth
- Crowns to strength the weak tooth/teeth
- Bridges and or implants to replace the missing
The extent of treatments required will determine the cost and the duration of treatment procedures.
It is also important that the patients will carry out an ‘Active Maintenance Program’ after completion of the ‘full mouth reconstruction’ program by visiting the dentist every six months for examination and clean to maintain the newly restored dentition in top condition and to enjoy a healthy mouth for years to come.

Special Feature
A Personal Story

In spite of a life time of fillings, flossing, tooth brushings, tooth pickings, root-canals, caps, extractions, gum ministrations, veneers, etc. I reached, at the age of sixty-seven, an almost insurmountable dental speed-hump.

My face and all that pertains, such as smile, speech and facial contours, had deteriorated into almost farce. I had shortened teeth, both capped and uncapped, irregular gaps, unsightly fillings, chronic abscesses, and painful eating.
I had been running around between dentists and referred specialists, spending lots and lots of money trying to get my teeth fixed, but most of the time I only received a patchwork deal that is a compromise between you immediate pain, the dentist's personal skill and the depth of your pocket.
I was still in a lot of pain and had difficulty eating and chewing.
This is a tacit agreement to proceed with immediate treatment without due regard to the ongoing subtle overall deterioration of your teeth. No thought is given to the future as regards losing dental competency as the years go by. This has been described amongst the profession as "supervised neglect.”
Finally I was referred to see Dr. Andrew Sih, who upon examination, told me that I had received the wrong treatments My teeth were too short to have the proper bite, and all my caps were built on the wrong foundation. There goes all the money I had spent!
Dr. Sih gave me a treatment plan to restore my mouth by removing what is left in my mouth after decades of supervised neglect and preparing it to a condition of balance, where all abscesses and decayed teeth are removed, faulty root-canals replaced, all fillings corrected, and all gums reconditioned.
Then free-handedly he used a tooth colored material to build-up my teeth to its original shape and function, followed by various restoration procedures using crowns, bridges and dental implants.
Now I have a mouth full of natural looking film-star teeth, a full smile, the ability to eat properly, and no future deterioration. Thanks to Dr. Sih
