What are dental implantsAn implant is the artificial part(s) that will biologically replace the damaged or missing body part(s). In dentistry, implant(s) are used to replace the missing root(s) in the jaw so that artificial tooth/teeth or other prosthesis can be secured and reproduce the natural usefulness of the dentition For replacing teethThe missing tooth /teeth in a variety of situations can now be replaced by using Dental Implants instead of the traditional options of dentures or bridges. PlacementBasically, the procedure is to provide some form of mechanical system that is surgically placed into the jaw bone where the tooth/teeth are missing. Typically, titanium implants are used, and if the surgery is successful, the bone will actually ‘grow’ and ‘hold’ the implant in the jaw. When this is achieved, the desired prosthesis can be placed to replace the missing tooth or teeth. To understand the principle of implant placement, one can imagine trying to place a picture frame on the wall by hooking to a screw inserted into the wall; in the case of a dental implant, we are surgically placing a titanium screw to the jaw in order to sustain the desired crowns or bridges |
