Dry Tooth Socket Emergency

When you have a tooth extracted, there is a chance you will get a dry socket.  While dry sockets are not common, they are painful to those who get them, which is why it is important to seek medical attention immediately.  Our Bondi Beach emergency dentist  can take care of the problem immediately, which is essential when you have a dry socket.

What is a Dry Socket?

Whenever a tooth is extracted, a hole is left in the bone.  In most cases, the hole will heal with the help of a blood clot.  The blood clot will rest on top of the hole, thus protecting it from any foreign objects.

What causes an emergency?

Unfortunately, though, there are cases when the clot is dislodged.  When that happens, there is nothing there to protect the hole.  That means the bone and nerves are exposed and they can come in contact with anything that goes into your mouth.   Every time you eat and drink, debris can end up in the hole.

Control Infection

If you have a dry society, it is necessary that you call our emergency dentist Bondi immediately.  Dry sockets are prone to infection, so you need to call the dentist to protect yourself.
Treatment for Dry Socket

Treatment with Bondi Dental

In order to take care of this problem, the dentist will need to clean out the socket to ensure that all debris is removed so the hole can heal.  He will gently remove all debris so the socket will not get infected.  If the socket is already infected, the removal of the debris will help the infection clear up.
He will also use medication directly on the socket so it will heal quickly.  Because of the nature of this problem, simply cleaning out the socket and sending the patient home is not enough.  The patent will be given medicated gauze that will be placed in the socket to fill it up.
You might be given pain medication after your dry society is treated. In addition, our emergency dentist Bondi will likely give you an antibiotic to fight off any infection.  Our dentist will make sure that nothing will happen to prevent the healing process.

Tips for Avoiding a Dry Socket

If you have a tooth extracted, there are certain things you can do to lessen your chances of getting a dry socket.  First, don’t smoke.  Smoking greatly increases the chance of a dry socket. If you are a smoker, make a point to quit after a tooth extraction.  You will be healthier and also lessen your chances of getting a dry socket.
Also, do not use a straw when you drink.  Drinking out a straw can increase your chances of getting a dry socket after a tooth extraction, so it is best to avoid straws until your mouth heals.
In general, you want to be as careful as possible with your mouth so your socket will heal correctly.
If you do have a dry socket, be sure to seek medical attention immediately. Our emergency dentist Bondi can help you with your problem and make the pain stop right away.
